WASHINGTON, D.C. (GMT): A member of the United States Air Force has been hospitalized in critical condition after setting himself ablaze in front of the Israeli Embassy in northwest Washington D.C. on Sunday afternoon.
The unidentified airman reportedly poured gasoline over himself and ignited himself in protest. Eyewitnesses described seeing flames engulfing the man as he stood near the embassy entrance.
Police and emergency responders rushed to the scene and extinguished the fire. The airman was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of severe burns.
The motive for the self-immolation is unclear. Authorities are investigating the incident with the assistance of the U.S. Air Force. The Pentagon has confirmed that the airman is an active-duty member but declined to provide further details.
The Israeli Embassy has not commented on the incident. Protests and demonstrations have been held outside the embassy in recent weeks in response to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine.
