Chelsea Kick Off Pre-Season With 5-0 Win Over Wrexham
New Era Dawns at Stamford Bridge as Blues Begin USA Tour
Chelsea's new era got off to a flying start as they thrashed Wrexham 5-0 in their opening pre-season match of the Blues' USA Tour at the Kenan Memorial Stadium. Christopher Nkunku, the club's record signing, opened the scoring after just 15 minutes, with further goals from Raheem Sterling, Mason Mount, Christian Pulisic, and an own goal from Wrexham defender Max Cleworth completing the rout. The match was the first under new manager Graham Potter, who took over from Thomas Tuchel at the end of last season. Potter fielded a strong starting lineup, with Nkunku, Sterling, and Mount all starting. Chelsea dominated the game from start to finish, with Wrexham rarely threatening the Blues' goal. The visitors took the lead when Nkunku collected a pass from Sterling and fired home from the edge of the box. Sterling doubled Chelsea's lead just five minutes later, finishing off a move involving Nkunku and Mount. Mount made it 3-0 just before half-time, curling a shot into the top corner from the edge of the area. Pulisic added a fourth goal in the second half, finishing off a move involving Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech. Cleworth then put the ball into his own net to complete the scoring. The win was a perfect start to Chelsea's pre-season campaign, and Potter will be pleased with the performance of his new charges. The Blues will now travel to the United States, where they will face Club America and Arsenal in further friendlies before the start of the new season.
